Shame2 Samuel 12:13

My Children Know and I Cannot Take That Back

This message is for the reader whose children know what they did and who cannot undo what the children now carry

A man told me that the worst thing he carries is not what he did. It is a specific afternoon that his daughter remembers and he does not.

She was nine. She has mentioned it twice in fifteen years, both times lightly, both times in a way that let him off, and both times he has gone away and not slept.

He has done the work. He is not the man who did it and has not been for a long time, and everybody in his life would say so.

And there is a girl, now grown, carrying a picture he put in her, and there is no route by which he can go and take it out of her, and that is the thing that gets him at three in the morning.

I am not a father and I am careful in this room. What I know is the other side of it: my sister found me, and she carries a picture I put in her, and there is nothing I can do about that and there never will be.

There is a conversation in 2 Samuel that holds both halves of this at once, and most preaching only ever uses one of them.

Both halves, in one conversation

Here is the first half.

And Nathan said to David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. (2 Samuel 12:13, King James Version)

The LORD also hath put away thy sin. Past tense, immediate, and it comes about four seconds after David says one sentence of confession. There is no interval and no process.

And then, in the same conversation, Nathan tells him what is still going to happen in his own house, and it is not softened at all.

Both halves are true and the passage does not pretend otherwise. The sin is put away and the consequences run. A man is forgiven and a household still carries what happened in it.

That is the exact shape of the thing this article is about, and it is the reason I trust this passage more than any comfortable version. Scripture is not offering anybody the undoing of what other people now carry, and it is also not making the forgiveness conditional on that undoing.

You are forgiven in the same conversation that the consequences are named. 2 Samuel 12:13 says the LORD also hath put away thy sin immediately after one sentence of confession. It is the Holy Spirit, Titus 3:5 named in the washing of regeneration, who did the putting away that no consequence can reverse.

What David asks to be allowed to do with it

The psalm David writes about this period contains a request that most people skip, and it is aimed forward rather than backward.

Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. (Psalm 51:13)

Then will I teach transgressors thy ways.

He does not ask to have the thing removed from the record. He asks to be allowed to be useful with it, and he says the usefulness will be to people in the same position.

That is a request a parent can actually make. Not: let my children forget. Let what they saw become something I can be honest with them about, in a way that is worth more to them than a clean story would have been.

I have watched that happen and I have watched it fail, and I am not going to promise anybody the good version. But the request is available, and David made it in the middle of the worst passage of his life.

You are able to ask to be useful with it rather than to have it removed. Psalm 51:13 asks then will I teach transgressors thy ways in the middle of the worst chapter of a life, and it is the same Spirit, John 16:13 the Spirit of truth, who makes honesty with a grown child into something other than a burden handed over twice.

What is promised about the years

There is a promise about lost years that is worth reading exactly, especially by a parent.

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten. (Joel 2:25)

Restore. Not rewind. Nobody in that passage gets a decade handed back and the chapter it sits in is about a harvest rather than about time travel.

Which matters here, because the years a child was nine in do not come back. That is a true and hard sentence and there is no way round it.

What the chapter describes is a future full enough that the arithmetic stops being the point, and it puts the eating and the restoring in the same verse without pretending the eating did not happen.

And Paul says the same thing about size in a single clause:

But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. (Romans 5:20)

Much more abound. It is a word about overflowing past a limit, and it is set deliberately against the word used for the sin. Paul is not saying the damage was small. He is saying the two are not the same size.

You are inside an overflow rather than an accounting. Romans 5:20 says grace did much more abound and uses a word about running past a limit. It is the Spirit of God, Romans 5:5 shedding the love of God abroad in our hearts, who delivers what an arithmetic cannot supply.

And if the three in the morning has got heavier than the memory itself, say it out loud to a person: a doctor, a counselor, a pastor you trust, or the 988 crisis line, which answers every hour there is. A parent alone at three with a picture they put in a child is exactly the room where this should not be carried in silence.

What is still in front of a household

There is a verse in Deuteronomy about a choice, and the second half of it is aimed at a family.

I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19)

That both thou and thy seed may live.

The choosing is present tense and it is available to a person with a history. And the benefit named is not confined to the one choosing; it is described as reaching the next generation.

So a household is not only a place where damage travels. Deuteronomy describes it as a place where a choice made today reaches forward as well, and it says so in the same sentence.

That is the only honest hope I know how to offer a parent in this position. Not that the picture goes. That what a child sees next is also going into them, and that it counts, and that Scripture says the reaching forward is real.

You are choosing something today that is described as reaching your children. Deuteronomy 30:19 says choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live. It is His Spirit, Galatians 5:22 naming the fruit that a household actually notices, who supplies what a person cannot manufacture for a family.

The breakthrough

So say the thing you assume disqualifies you, out loud, to God, once.

You are forgiven in the same conversation where the consequences are named. 2 Samuel 12:13 has the LORD hath put away thy sin and the hard news in one exchange. It is the same Spirit, Titus 3:5 named in the washing, who did the putting away that no consequence reverses.

And I am not going to promise you the picture goes out of your child. It does not, and mine has not gone out of my sister, and anybody who tells you otherwise has not been on either side of it.

You are able to choose something today that Scripture says reaches forward. Deuteronomy 30:19 says choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live. It is the Spirit of God rather than a clean history who is named as producing what a household actually notices.

Nothing here undoes an afternoon. What is settled is that the putting away was immediate and unconditional, and that a man in the worst chapter of his life asked to be made useful with it rather than to have it deleted, and was.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over what your household carries is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God put a sin away in the same conversation where He named what was still coming, so speak to the shame rather than to your children: a declaration here is never aimed at another human being's will. Bless them and command the shame. Every line below is 2 Samuel 12:13 and Deuteronomy 30:19 handed back in your own voice. It is the Holy Spirit, not a clean history, that makes saying it a receiving. Say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him.

  1. Shame in front of my own children, you are not what I hand them next. The Word of God says the LORD also hath put away thy sin, and that was said in the same conversation as the hard news and neither canceled the other.
  2. Verdict that arrives at three in the morning, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am inside an overflow, because Romans 5:20 says grace did much more abound, and His Spirit is the one shedding that love abroad in me.
  3. Father, You set life and death before me and told me to choose life, and Deuteronomy 30:19 says that both thou and thy seed may live. I receive that today, and I am saying the thing I assume disqualifies me out loud to You, once.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
