There is a fear that lives specifically in people who have been forgiven, and it has almost no vocabulary attached to it.
It is not the fear that God will not forgive. That one gets talked about constantly and there are a hundred sermons for it. This is a different one, and it comes later, and it comes to people who have already received something.
It goes like this: He forgave what He knows about.
Somewhere in a person there is a list of things not covered in the original disclosure. Not necessarily bigger things. Sometimes smaller and more humiliating things, the ones a person did not include when they came, because they were dealing with the headline and the rest did not seem load bearing.
And so a quiet arrangement forms in which the mercy feels provisional, pending a full audit that has not happened yet.
I carried that for a while. My headline is public and I preach from it. What I did not tell anybody for a long time were the ordinary, unglamorous, small things around the edges of it, and for a period I genuinely believed those were the ones that might yet undo everything.
There is a psalm that answers this, and it answers it in a strange order that is worth following.
The knowledge described is complete before you open your mouth
Here is the verse.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. (Psalm 139:4, King James Version)
Not a word in my tongue. The knowledge described precedes the speaking. It is not that God hears well. It is that the disclosure adds nothing He did not have.
The verses around it are just as thorough. He knows the sitting down and the rising up. He compasses the path and the lying down. There is a line about darkness not being dark to Him, which is the specific fear of a person with a private list.
So the audit a person is dreading is not pending. It was concluded before the first conversation.
You are not holding anything back that changes the terms, because the terms were set with the whole inventory in view. Psalm 139:4 says thou knowest it altogether before a word is on the tongue, and it is His Spirit, 1 Corinthians 2:10 searching all things, even the deep things of God, who is described as the one who searches rather than the one who is informed.
Read where the psalm ends up
Now watch the order, because this is what makes the psalm useful rather than frightening.
Having spent twenty two verses describing a knowledge nothing escapes, David does not conclude by hiding. He concludes with this:
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)
Search me. He asks for the thing he has just said is already happening.
That is not redundancy. It is a man moving from being known to consenting to be known, which are two completely different states to live in. The facts are identical; the posture is not.
And notice what he asks for at the end. Not: and then decide about me. Lead me in the way everlasting. He assumes the relationship survives the search, and he asks for direction rather than for a verdict.
You are able to consent to a search that was already complete, and that changes everything about how it feels. Psalm 139:23 has him asking for the searching he has just described as constant. It is the Holy Spirit, Romans 8:16 bearing witness with our spirit, who makes being known feel like belonging rather than like exposure.
The man under the fig tree
There is a small scene in John that has done more for this fear in me than any argument.
Nathanael has just said something dismissive about where Jesus is from. He is brought over, and Jesus says something complimentary about him, and Nathanael asks, reasonably, how do you know me.
Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. (John 1:48)
I saw thee. Nobody knows what was happening under that fig tree. The text does not say and I am not going to invent it. What we know is that it was private, and that it was enough for Nathanael to change his entire assessment in one sentence.
The point is the order. Jesus had already seen him. Then He called him. Then He said something good about him. The seeing came first, and the calling came after, and the good word came with full information.
You were seen before you were called, and the calling came after the seeing. John 1:48 has Him saying I saw thee about a private moment before the man had said one word to Him. It is the same Spirit, John 16:14 who takes of His and shows it to us, who makes an ancient scene land in a private fear.
Paul dates the whole thing
If a person still wonders whether the terms could be revised, Paul gives the timestamp that closes it.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
While we were yet sinners. The offer was made and the price paid at the point of maximum information and minimum improvement. Nothing on your private list postdates that.
And Hebrews adds the sentence that settles it for anybody who likes their reassurance in legal form:
Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. (Hebrews 4:13)
Him with whom we have to do. That is the phrase. The One who knows all of it is the same One the arrangement is with. There is no second party who has not been briefed.
You have an arrangement made by Somebody who was never going to be surprised by you. Romans 5:8 dates the love at while we were yet sinners, and it is the Spirit of God, Ephesians 1:13 sealing us until the redemption of the purchased possession, who is named as the seal on terms that were set with everything in view.
And if the private list has been keeping you awake and has started to weigh more than it did, say it out loud to a person as well: a doctor, a counselor, a pastor you trust, or the 988 crisis line, which answers every hour there is. A thing carried privately for decades gets heavier rather than lighter, and it was never meant to be a solo arrangement.
So eat one meal at a table with somebody, with nothing on and nothing to settle.
You are fully known and the offer was made anyway. Psalm 139:4 says thou knowest it altogether. It is the Holy Spirit, 1 Corinthians 2:10 searching the deep things, who is described as searching rather than being informed by anybody.
And do not treat the private list as a separate case. It has never been a separate case. It was in front of Him at the time the terms were set, and Paul dates those terms at while we were yet sinners.
You are sealed on terms that took the whole of you into account. Ephesians 1:13 names the Spirit as the seal after believing, and it is the same Spirit rather than your disclosure who is named as that seal.
Nothing here promises the fear does not turn up again. Mine turns up in the small hours and it is very persuasive at three in the morning. What is settled is that the audit concluded before the conversation started, and that the psalm about being completely known ends with a man asking to be searched.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over a fear of being found out is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God set the terms with the whole inventory in front of Him, so speak to the private list you have been keeping: you have standing to address it because Scripture already ruled on what He knew and when. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Psalm 139:4 and Romans 5:8 handed back in your own voice. It is His Spirit, not your disclosure, that makes saying it a receiving.
- Fear that there is something He has not seen, you are not describing the God of Psalm 139. The Word of God says there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether, and the audit finished before I opened my mouth.
- Private list I have kept back, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am not living on a mercy that can be withdrawn, because Romans 5:8 dates it at while we were yet sinners, and His Spirit is the seal on that.
- Father, You saw me under the fig tree before anybody called me, and John 1:48 puts the seeing before the calling. I receive that today, and I am eating one meal with nothing on and nothing to settle.
