RepentanceProverbs 24:16

A Just Man Falleth Seven Times, and the Verse Counts the Rising

This message is for the reader who did the same thing again this week after telling God they were finished with it

The worst ten minutes are not the ones where it happens.

The worst ten minutes come after. That is the part nobody writes about, and it is the part where the real damage gets done, and I would like to describe it accurately because a person in it usually thinks they are the only one who has ever been there.

It goes like this. It has happened again. And the first thing that arrives is not guilt, exactly. It is arithmetic. A voice starts adding up: how many times, how long since the last one, what you said in the car three weeks ago, what you told a friend in the spring.

And then the arithmetic reaches its conclusion, and the conclusion is always the same one: then none of it was real.

That is the moment. Not the thing itself. That moment, where a person quietly retires from the whole enterprise, and stops praying about it, not out of rebellion but out of what feels like honesty.

I have been in those ten minutes more than I can count, and the only thing that has ever got me out of them is a verse that most people quote wrong.

The falling is inside the description, not outside it

Here is the verse.

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. (Proverbs 24:16, King James Version)

Read the first four words as a unit. A just man falleth. Not: a just man used to fall. Not: a man who falls is not just. The falling is inside the sentence that describes him.

Solomon is not excusing anything. Read the second half: the wicked fall too, and stay there. The difference between the two men in that verse is not the falling, because both of them fall. It is the getting up.

Which means the arithmetic in those ten minutes is not doing what it thinks it is doing. It is counting the wrong number. The verse counts the rising, and the voice in the room is counting the falls, and those are two different totals.

You are described in that verse and not excluded by it, and the falling sits inside the description. Proverbs 24:16 puts seven falls inside the account of a just man rather than outside it, and it is His Spirit, Romans 8:16 bearing witness with our spirit, who tells a person which side of that verse they are on when they cannot tell.

Micah says it as a warning to whoever is watching

There is a line in Micah that has more fight in it than anything else in this subject, and it is aimed at an onlooker.

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me. (Micah 7:8)

Rejoice not against me. He is talking to somebody who is enjoying this. And the argument he makes is not that he did not fall. He grants the fall completely.

His argument is about what happens next, and he states it as a fact rather than as a hope: when I fall, I shall arise. Not if. When.

That is a man who has been down before and knows the shape of the road, and who is telling whoever is watching not to write the ending yet.

You have a next sentence, and Micah writes it in the middle of the fall rather than after it. Micah 7:8 says when I fall, I shall arise while the man is still down. It is the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 3:16 strengthening the inner man, who supplies the standing that a person cannot promise themselves.

The psalm names the hand that is doing the holding

Somebody in those ten minutes will always ask the practical question: what actually gets a man up? And the answer in the psalms is not effort.

Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. (Psalm 37:24)

Not utterly. That is a careful word and I love it for its honesty. It does not say he will not fall, and it does not say the fall will not hurt. It says there is a floor under the fall, and it is a hand.

Which is the difference between a man who slips on stairs holding a rail and a man who slips holding nothing. Both of them fall. Only one of them goes all the way down.

That is what the arithmetic never accounts for. It counts the falls as though nothing were holding you, and Scripture says something is.

You are held while you fall, and that is stated in the same verse as the falling. Psalm 37:24 says the LORD upholdeth him with his hand in the middle of the sentence about falling. It is the same Spirit, Galatians 5:16 walking with a person rather than watching them, who does the holding a person cannot feel in the ten minutes.

What John writes in a letter to people who already know better

There is a sentence in John's first letter that shows exactly how the New Testament handles this, and its tone is the whole lesson.

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (1 John 2:1)

Both halves at once. That ye sin not, which is honest and does not water anything down. And then, immediately, and if any man sin, with a provision already in place.

He does not pretend it will not happen. He puts an advocate in the sentence before anybody has fallen, and he calls the readers little children while he does it.

And Jesus does the same thing with Peter in advance. He tells him he is going to fail, and in the same breath says this:

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. (Luke 22:32)

When thou art converted. Not if. He books the recovery before the failure has happened, and gives him a job on the other side of it.

You have an advocate who was in position before the fall, and John says so in the same sentence. 1 John 2:1 provides the advocate in advance rather than after an appeal, and it is the Spirit of God, John 14:16 given as another Comforter, who is the one standing by while the other One speaks.

And if what keeps happening has got past what a person can carry alone in those ten minutes, say it out loud to somebody: a doctor, a counselor, a sponsor, a pastor you trust, or the 988 crisis line, which answers every hour there is. The ten minutes are where people get lost, and nobody should be in them alone.

The breakthrough

So say the plainest sentence you have. Tonight, not after a clean week.

You are a man or a woman that verse is describing, falling and rising both. Proverbs 24:16 puts seven falls inside the account of a just man and counts the rising as the difference. It is the Holy Spirit, Romans 8:16 bearing witness with our spirit, who says which side of it you are on when the arithmetic says otherwise.

And do not read tonight as a verdict on the last three years. The voice doing the adding is not a prosecutor with a file. It is a voice, and Scripture already put an advocate in the room, in advance, before you fell.

You have been held with a hand the whole way down. Psalm 37:24 says he shall not be utterly cast down, for the LORD upholdeth him, and it is the same Spirit rather than your record who is named as the one walking alongside.

Nothing here promises the next one does not come. Solomon says seven and does not sound surprised. What is settled is that the getting up is the number being counted, and that an advocate was standing there before you did anything at all.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over the arithmetic in the ten minutes is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God put the falling inside the description of a just man Himself, so speak to the voice doing the adding: you have standing to address it because Scripture already counted the right number. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Proverbs 24:16 and Psalm 37:24 handed back in your own voice. It is His Spirit, not your record, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Voice that says this one cancels everything, you are not reading the verse. The Word of God says a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again, and the falling is inside the description and not outside it.
  2. Verdict that none of it was ever real, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am held while I fall, because Psalm 37:24 says the LORD upholdeth him with his hand, and His Spirit is the one walking alongside rather than watching.
  3. Father, You put an advocate in the room before I fell, and 1 John 2:1 says we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. I receive that today, and I am saying the plainest sentence I have with nothing added to make it sound better.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
