Counting the CostMatthew 6:32

Your Heavenly Father Knoweth That Ye Have Need of All These Things

This message is for the reader who is afraid of losing the income and has not been able to say that out loud to anybody

A man told me his real fear about three conversations in, and it was not the one he had been giving me.

He had been talking about integrity, and about what he could and could not go on doing, and all of that was true and he meant it.

And then he said, quite quickly, looking at the table: I am frightened about the money.

Then he apologized for saying it, which is the part I want to talk about. He apologized to me, unprompted, for being afraid of something entirely reasonable, as though a man with a mortgage were required to be above arithmetic.

That apology is doing a lot of damage in a lot of houses, and it is not from Scripture.

There is a passage everybody quotes at people in this position, and it is usually quoted at exactly the wrong altitude, so let me read what it actually names.

He names ordinary things, not increase

Here is the verse, and the two words in it that matter most.

(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. (Matthew 6:32, King James Version)

All these things. Go back and read what those things are, because the passage names them. Food. Drink. Clothing. He has just spent several verses on birds and lilies and He is talking about eating and having something to wear.

He is not talking about a standard of living and He is not talking about a career trajectory. The category He addresses is need, and He names it specifically so that nobody can inflate it.

And knoweth. Present tense, already, before anybody raises it. The fear my friend apologized for saying out loud was already fully known, which means the apology was for informing Somebody who was not being informed.

You are dealing with Somebody who already knows the number you have not said out loud. Matthew 6:32 says your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. It is His Spirit, Romans 8:26 helping our infirmities because we know not what we should pray for, who carries what a person cannot get into words.

The promise in the next verse, read exactly

Then comes the sentence everybody quotes.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33)

All these things is the same phrase. It is the same list. Food, drink, clothing.

It is not: and your income shall be restored. It is not: and the client shall be replaced. The promise is scoped by the phrase it uses, and the phrase points back at a list of ordinary needs.

I am being precise about this because the loose version of that verse has hurt people I know. A man is told to seek first and then everything will be added, and he hears a promise about his standard of living, and when that does not happen he concludes that God failed or that he did.

Neither is true. He was handed a promise that was never made.

What is promised is genuinely enormous and it is also specific: the ordinary requirements of a life are on Somebody else's list rather than only on yours.

You have the ordinary requirements of a life on Somebody else's list. Matthew 6:33 scopes all these things to the food and clothing it has just named, and it is the Holy Spirit, Galatians 5:22 naming peace among His fruit, who supplies what a promise correctly read still leaves a person needing.

Paul says he had to learn it

There is a passage where Paul describes his own relationship with money, and the striking word is that he learned it.

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (Philippians 4:12)

I am instructed. The word is about being trained, initiated, taught by experience. It did not arrive with his conversion.

And notice he says both. Both full and hungry. Both abounding and suffering need. He is not describing a life that stabilized; he is describing a man who learned to be in either state.

Which is the honest thing to hand somebody afraid about money. Not: it will be fine. That there is a thing to learn, that Paul says he learned it, and that he does not pretend the hungry half did not happen.

And in Timothy he sets the floor plainly:

And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. (1 Timothy 6:8)

Food and clothing again. The same two categories, set as the floor rather than as the ceiling.

You are being taught something rather than promised a stable outcome. Philippians 4:12 says I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry. It is the same Spirit, Galatians 5:22 naming longsuffering among His fruit, who supplies the learning that only comes with time.

And if the money fear has been sitting on you and you have not said it out loud to anybody, say it to a person this week: your spouse, a counselor, a pastor you trust, or the 988 crisis line, which answers every hour there is. A man frightened about money in silence is a man who makes worse decisions, and the silence is the part to break first.

The promise attached to the money verse

There is one verse about money in Hebrews and the promise attached to it is not about the money.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13:5)

Read what the for attaches. The reason given for contentment is not a guarantee of provision. It is a promise of presence.

I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. That is the ground under the whole verse, and it is a promise about company rather than about a balance.

And that is what I actually have to give somebody. Not a number. My income did not come back the way it went, and I count that as worth it and never as an investment, and I will say that from any stage you put me on.

What I have is that I have not been left, and that is the promise the verse about money attaches itself to.

You have a promise of company attached to the verse about money rather than a promise about the money. Hebrews 13:5 grounds contentment in I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. It is the Spirit of God, John 14:16 given as another Comforter to abide with you for ever, who is how that promise is kept now.

The breakthrough

So write down the specific thing you think this will cost, and pray one sentence over the list.

You are already fully known on the number you have not said out loud. Matthew 6:32 says your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. It is the Holy Spirit, Romans 8:26 helping our infirmities, who carries a fear a person cannot phrase.

And I am not going to promise you the income. Read Matthew 6 slowly: the promise is scoped to food and clothing, and stretching it into a promise about a standard of living is how people get hurt in the name of God.

You have a promise of company attached to the money verse rather than a promise about money. Hebrews 13:5 grounds it in I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. It is the same Spirit rather than a balance who is named as the Comforter given to abide.

Nothing here makes the shortfall smaller. Hers took eight months and a change she did not want. What is settled is that the need is already known, that the floor is named as food and clothing, and that Paul had to learn both halves and said so.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over a fear about money is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God said the need was known before anybody raised it, so speak to the silence you have been keeping: you have standing to address it because Scripture already scoped the promise honestly. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Matthew 6:32 and Hebrews 13:5 handed back in your own voice. It is His Spirit, not a balance, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Fear about money I have not said out loud, you are not a thing I have to hide. The Word of God says your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things, and the knowing came before anybody raised it.
  2. Apology for being afraid of arithmetic, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I am being taught rather than promised a stable outcome, because Philippians 4:12 says I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, and His Spirit supplies the longsuffering.
  3. Father, You said I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, and Hebrews 13:5 attaches that to the verse about money rather than a promise about the money. I receive that today, and I am writing down what this will cost and praying one sentence over the list.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
